IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome

It is known as a "functional disorder" as there are no visible signs of any disease when the bowel is examined but it doesn't work properly. There are definite signs and symptoms that a person experiences indicating that there is a change in functional quality but no visible evidence. A colonoscopy is usually conducted to rule out other diseases such as autoimmune conditions Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Signs and symptoms that may be connected to IBS include:
 
  • recurring episodes of diarrhoea or constipation, can be dominant in either or
  • may alternate between diarrhoea and constipation,
  • painful cramps,
  • bloating,
  • mucus in the stool,
  • incomplete evacuation of stools, and
  • nausea.
What is a normal stool?
 
Normal can be different but generally speaking a normal stool is one that is formed but not hard, contains no blood and is passed without any pains or cramps.
 
Additional factors to consider when it comes to the stool includes colour and smell
The colour should ideally be a dark brown colour, there is light brown or even black then this may need to be investigated further and could be connected to nutrient absorption and breakdown issues known as malabsorption, this involves the macronutrients protein, fat, and carbohydrates.
 
Also connected to malabsorption is the smell, there should be no odour in the stool. If there is smell this is a sign that the digestive system is struggling to breakdown the food you are eating. Excess flatulence is also an indicator here.
 
A Naturopath can connect different signs and symptoms to different problems with individual macronutrients (proteins, carbs, fats) and work in those areas.
 
Basically the stool tells A LOT about the health of the digestive tract and I use this information to tailor suit your compounded products just for your symptoms.
 
Causes of IBS - Frequently seen triggers include beginning after a bout of gastroenteritis and continuing long after the bacteria or virus is gone, food intolerance, poor diet, emotional stress, parasites, and medications.
 
Emotional stress plays a large role in IBS, strong emotions such as anxiety, stress, and depression can effect the nerves in the bowel. If there are any signs of emotional stress then these need to be addressed as part of the treatment plan. As a Naturopath I work a lot with emotional healing therapy and spend time listening to my patients and helping them through these emotions using herbs and essences to help move past the emotions that are blocking their health.

What is the main underlying cause of IBS?

Your gut bacteria

If you have the not so nice microbes in charge of your intestines then you are going to have issues. Your gut bacteria are responsible for so many functions in the body.  Two main ones that are more noticeable in women are slow metabolism due to thyroid hormones not being converted and heavy painful periods due to a reuptake of oestrogen.  These all happen in your gut and if your gut is out of balance then other systems in the body will also be out of balance. IBS is a symptom of imbalanced gut bacteria and there is a solution, it is not something you have to put up with for the rest of your life.

What can be done?
As a Naturopath I assess each patient individually to work out a treatment plan that suits them. Then I compound products for each individual patient to get them back on track and enjoying life again.  These include herbal and nutritional medicine as well as making dietary and lifestyle changes. Rather than needing to know the location of every single toilet, everywhere they go. Gut repair and rebalance is done in stages, starting with repairing the lining and reducing inflammation, improving digestion and then onto re-balancing the microbiome.

Risk factors of not treating IBS
 
Chronic constipation can lead to haemorrhoids, faecal impaction and rectal prolapse.
Chronic diarrhoea can lead to dehydration. As food is passing through the intestines more rapidly there will be a loss of water, nutrients, and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium which are essential for the function of every cell in the body.
 
By gaining a thorough understanding of you stool I am able to work out a treatment plan just for you and help you move towards happier days where you don't need an app on your phone to find the closest toilet.

Hi my name is Melissa Callaghan - I am a Bachelor qualified and accredited Naturopath and Nutritionist who specialises in reducing metabolic inflammation as well as improving gut health and balancing hormones.

In my many years working in clinic with my patients I believed that even though everyone had different illnesses there must be one thing that everyone has in common. Our society was just getting sicker and sicker. The most common conditions people go to hospital for are heart conditions, diabetes, obesity, and mental health. I questioned why this was getting worse and worse and occurring in younger age groups more and more.

So I made it my mission to try and get to the bottom of this and I spent years searching for answers. I knew there were contributing factors to people getting sick such as toxins and that these needed to be removed to prevent further sickness but not everyone was exposed to the same toxins. Yet the same illnesses kept filling our medical system. Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, mental health issues and obesity. I've worked in all these areas for years there must be something in common. I asked myself.

Then it hit me, everyone eats. It must be in the food. I began a journey of discovery and found that it was the ingredients in our food creating metabolic inflammation at a cellular level in our bodies. This was blocking pathways so no wonder we couldn't function properly. 

It all began to make sense. If I can create a program that helps people see food from a different perspective then I may be able to help reverse and prevent all of the conditions that people came to my clinic with and combine this with my natural medicine formulas to catch you up and help you feel better quicker.

I then began to add in the recipes and focused on creating meals that were delicious, quick and easy to prepare and that the whole family would love.

There was one last thing that I needed.  Over the years I had researched many many other programs and have seen many people try these programs only to bounce right back to where they started or worse after they finished.

I vowed to myself that the most important component (other than regaining health) was for everyone to be able to sustain the new lifestyle. I created a program that is completely flexible. You can go intense when you need to and not so intense when you don’t.

You can change your habits and stop the cravings, binging, and emotional eating. This a big part of what I do. I help you to understand your relationship with food and turn it into a positive one so you will never feel guilty about eating ever again. When you can see the subconsious programming and the habits that got you to where you are and learn skills to change these it becomes easier to sustain a happier, healthier life.

After getting the ball rolling I began to use this program in clinic with my patients and within weeks and months I was seeing huge success.  Blood test markers were correcting themselves especially acidity levels and major reductions in cholesterol. People were no longer borderline diabetic, blood pressures where going down, cholesterol was going down, Drs had to reduce and remove medications. Reflux was non-existent and fat and kilos began to melt away. Most of all health began to improve.

I knew I was on the right path.

In my clinic I have been putting my patients through this program that I have called it "Toxins Be Gone - Wholistic Detox program". The program incorporates a detox from inflammatory foods as well as working on changing the habits that lead you to choosing inflammatory foods in the first place (usually emotional eating).  As well as the education of how certain foods and toxins impact your body, the program works on removing toxins that are preventing the mind and the body from working effectively, helping to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce risk of diabetes and heart disease and help to reverse conditions you already have like high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Sometimes making changes can be difficult which is why a major component is working on the subconscious choices and reprogramming your habits and mindset.
