Hormones out of balance!!!

Can you relate to these signs?

Fatigue, headaches or migraines, thyroid dysfunction, mood changes, irritability, anxiety or depression, weight gain, irregular menstrual cycle, breast tenderness, fibroids, endometriosis, low libido, hot flashes.

Your progesterone may be getting stolen!!!

These signs can also be triggered by other conditions such as hypothyroidism, low iron, low vitamin d, cortisol imbalance, are a few examples however we can't rule out progesterone. As a Naturopath it is my job to find the root cause of your signs and symptoms and when you present to me with many of the above signs and symptoms (there are usually a lot more in addition to these such as sleep issues) then I will ask many questions to find where they are coming from.

One of the major causes of progesterone deficiency is stress.  When we are stressed our body releases our stress hormone known as cortisol and when this spikes it blocks our progesterone receptors and limits its activity. Therefore leading to many signs and symptoms such as what is listed above. 

We call this Pregnenolone steal.  Basically stress increases the need for cortisol and to make cortisol the body needs to steal progesterone from the adrenal glands and therefore not leaving it available to do other jobs. This also leaves opportunity for oestrogen to become dominant leading to many issues with the most common being heavy menstrual bleeding. 

 

This is the reason why I will begin working on reproductive hormones AND also working on cortisol regulation and we are very lucky to have herbal medicine that works directly on improving cortisol regulation.

Look at the role progesterone plays in the body:

  • use fat for energy,
  • anti depressant,
  • facilitates thyroid hormone action, plus lots more.

    Cortisol needs to be balanced in order to create hormonal harmony.  Luckily we have herbal medicine that helps to regulate cortisol, this will help you catch up and start to feel better alot quicker. 

 

Stress also plays a major role in peri-menopausal and menopausal weight gain.  When the main hormones of oestrogen and progesterone begin to decline you are no longer protected and cortisol and insulin take over, these guys are hoarders and they like to store fat, especially around the belly.  It becomes super important to work on insulin resistance and your body's stress response and cortisol levels as these hormones can be a bit mischievous and need to be kept in check. Also important to add in foods to help boost progesterone.
