Fatigue - Cravings - Need a sugar hit!!!!
Posted by Melissa Callaghan on
What is fatigue - extreme tiredness resulting from mental, physical, or emotion exertion or illness.
When the body becomes fatigued it can feel like it will never go away even with a full night of sleep. Not only is fatigue there in the morning…it gets worse every afternoon usually around 3pm. It becomes so easy to have a nanna nap even for just 10 mins (or even longer) and the cravings for sugar and coffee are sky high. Then sometimes the energy can kick back in at night and cause sleep problems including difficulty getting to sleep with constant mind talk or frequently waking up during the night and not being able to get back to sleep. You may call yourself a night owl.
THE ONE IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT FATIGUE IS A SYMPTOM NOT A CONDITION. WE NEED TO FIND THE CAUSE.
Possible causes of fatigue
Side effects of medications for medical conditions or the medical conditions themselves such as anxiety, depression, diabetes, thyroid irregularities, irritable bowel conditions, obesity, stress, grief, sleep apnoea, or chronic pain. Other contributors can be lifestyle choices including alcohol consumption, drugs, excess exercise, or lack of physical activity, and eating habits. Causes can also include emotional stressors from work life, social life and/or home life.
When fatigue is present several other symptoms may appear such as:
Dizziness, foggy head, muscle weakness, blurry vision, low motivation, short-term memory, loss of appetite, headaches, difficulty making decisions, poor concentration, and changes in moods.
Most likely cause of fatigue is a dysregulation in the stress hormone cortisol. This is where natural medicine comes in handy as we have amazing herbs that work on regulating cortisol whether you have too much going on or too little we can help to regulate it.
What can be done
A full case history will be taken on your first consultation. This gives us the opportunity to find any past contributors and make connections. This will also delve into various systems in the body such as digestive, nervous, and reproductive systems. We will spend a lot of time looking for the root cause as there are usually many factors working in combination to cause fatigue.
We will also analyse any blood tests or functional tests such as urine tests to rule out any physical causes such as infections, anaemia, or even hormonal irregularities.
The best part about seeing a Naturopath is we have herbs that are specifically indicated for fatigue and its associated symptoms, and can help regulate the body to cope better in stressful situations and provide more energy.
Who am I?
I am a Bachelor qualified Naturopath who specialises in improving metabolic processes in the body. Major areas for improvement include gut, thyroid, kidney, skin and liver health. Conditions such as hypothyroidism, fatty liver, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type II diabetes, & irritable bowel conditions. I help my patients by giving them symptomatic relief while working on repairing the underlying causes of metabolic stress and waste accumulation. Patients experience amazing results which are seen in their blood tests with improved thyroid markers, cholesterol, and liver markers. As well as lower blood pressure and see relief from improved gastrointestinal symptoms like the ones that mean you need to know where every single toilet is before you leave the house.
