Thyroid and weight gain. What's the link?
The thyroid gland is the largest gland in the endocrine system. It sits in the middle of the neck just below the Adams apple in men and it is shaped like a butterfly.
The thyroid gland produces several thyroid hormones after being asked to do so by the pituitary gland in the form of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). The hormones that come from the thyroid are mainly inactive (T4) and need to still be converted into their active form T3 which is needed for metabolism.
Thyroid hormones are vital for the development and metabolism of most parts of you body. When there is even a slight problem here then there will be a knock on effect throughout your body.
Heavy periods connected to underactive thyroid
Your period tells me a lot about your health - especially your thyroid.
Thyroid hormones affect every cell in you body
The reason you may feel not quite right when you thyroid is dysregulated is because every cell in your body is also feeling dysregulated.
It is also the reason why thyroid issues have so many signs and symptoms, because they impact so many different areas of the body.
Thyroid hormones play a large role in menstruation and one of the major signs is whether your period is heavy or light. Heavy periods go hand in hand with under active thyroid.
Your thyroid could be involved f you notice signs such as:
Underactive thyroid and PCOS
In my clinical practice the two main areas I see that affect women are both hormone related and include the thyroid gland and the reproductive system. What is interesting is that these two areas are actually connected and your body needs to be treated as a whole not just in one specific area, eg oral contraceptive pill or thyroxine.
It is not often that I see a case of PCOS without also seeing hypothyroidism signs (usually undiagnosed) in the same person.
What is interesting is that both of these conditions are in very different areas of the body and yet they share many similar features. New research shows that the dietary deficiencies that may cause hypothyroidism are also the underlying deficiencies in the development of PCOS.

What is Naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a distinct and complete system of health care.
Six foundational principles underpin the practice of naturopathy:
* The healing power of nature,
* First do no harm,
* Find and treat the cause whenever possible, not only the symptoms,
* Treat the whole person,
* Education and Prevention.
These six principles are kept in mind when a I take your case, develop a treatment plan and offer maintenance for long term good health.
Naturopathy is both an art and a science. Naturopaths are prevention medicine specialists. Today we use scientific evidence as well as traditional evidence in practice.
My case-taking through your appointments often uncovers dis-ease long before it has become a diagnosable pathology. I treat both acute and chronic conditions for all ages.
Naturopaths have many answers for common conditions including mental health, gut health, women's health. I use a variety of modalities in my practice. These may include: herbal medicine, nutritional medicine, dietary and lifestyle advice. Testing may also be required.
